Symbol Description

The mermaid, sometimes confused with the siren or lamia, is an elemental being of the water. The scaly pattern on her lower parts emphasizes her association with the "lower ocean" or unconscious mind. The siren, whether as a bird or fish-woman, symbolizes the feminine principle as a source of temptation, corruption, and stagnation. The twin-tailed siren is an amalgamation of the two legs of woman applied to the single tail of the fish. The twin fish-tail represents the duality,or conflicts, that exist within the waters.
