The number three symbolizes the creation of spirit out of matter, of the active out of the passive. It has the power to resolve dualism. Every instrument, object or being with three parts where one would be usually shows a tripling of its symbolic force. There are many ternary symbols, like the trident. The Trident is an attribute of Neptune and of Satan, whose realm is the haunt of monsters and base forms of life, as well as the lower world, or unconscious.
