Biographical Text

"Between 1696 and in 1719 the printing press formed by Samuel de Tournes (1669-1752) and his brother Gabriel de Tournes received this name. Between 1727 and 1781 the printing house received this name, based in Geneva and later also in Lyon, which was run by different members of the Tournes family over the years. Various works by these printers with fake printing sites (Amsterdam, Cologne, Antwerp and Basel) have been identified-this was done in order to facilitate the distribution of these works in Catholic countries." (translated from CERL)

"Samuel worked in association with his brother Gabriel de Tournes from 1695, under the names "Frères de Tournes", "Fratres de Tournes" or "Hermanos de Tournes" or "Gabriel & Samuel de Tournes". He is also part of the association formed by his brother Gabriel, Jean Antoine Chouet, Jean Antoine Cramer, Philibert Perachon and David Ritter between 1700 and 1710" (CERL)
Jean de Tournes was an ancestor in the printing business, in Lyons: "Printer-bookseller; in Lyon, King's Printer (1564-1585); also author, in particular of several epistles and prefaces. - Succeeded his father who died of the plague in 1564. Protestant. His printing press was ransacked on Oct. 1567 and he himself was imprisoned for two months. Imprisoned again in 1572, he escaped the Saint Bartholomew's Day massacre. Leaves Lyon on Oct. 1585 after the edict of Henry III forcing Protestants to abjure or leave the kingdom. Moved to Geneva where he began printing around 1590. Received as a "bourgeois" of Geneva in April 1596. Became a member of the Council of Two Hundred in 1604." (CERL)

De Forti dulcedo
Sweetness by chance
