Biographical Text

Quoted and translated from Wikimonde article:Les héritiers de Sébastien Gryphe
"When Sébastien Gryphe died in 1556, his widow Françoise Miraillet took over the business while his son Antoine ran the printing workshop. Both publish under the name “apud haeredes Seb. Gryphii". Due to a succession dispute, they had to wait until 1561 for a letter of legitimation for Antoine to establish the company's legal status.

At the death of his mother in 1565, Antoine Gryphe published under his own name. He resumes texts published by his father, including the Latin and Greek classics, but stands out, making regional history studies appear in French. It is no longer just bookseller, printing his structures in other workshops. His business is gradually declining and is pursued for debt. In 1582, he bought the equipment of  Jean II de Tournes, who had to go into exile in Geneva. When he died, his own children refused his succession. (Raphaële Mouren (dir.) et Ian Maclean)

Quoted and translated from CERL on Antonius Gryphius:
"Printer, Editor, and Bookseller active in Lyons, son of Sebastian the elder. Born in 1526, he worked at first in his father's business, but then came into his own as an editor and bookseller. He married his cousin Catherine Pertend and had four children: Catherine, Marie, Marguerite and Sebastian the Younger. He had severe economic difficulties and finally was imprisoned for debt. He died in 1599; Sebastian the Younger succeeded him."
