Biographical Text

Variscus & Co: Publishing company active in Venice for the printing of legal texts. Francesco or Giovanni Francesco Calegari, son of Giacomo, originally from Biella and a bookseller in Messina was in company with Varisco and Sessa in 1571 and 1572.

Haeredes Sessa Melchiorre:
Publishers and printers active in Venice at least until 1629. They were the widow, Veronica, and the Sons of Melchiorre the elder: Giovanni Battista the younger, Giovanni Bernardo, Melchiorre the younger and Bernardino. The company was administered by Veronica at least until 1582; the sons worked both together and separately, and were part of several publishing companies, including that of the "Society of the Renewed Eagle." As publishers, they used many printers, including Giovanni Antonio Rampazetto, Girolamo Polo, Alessandro Griffio and Domenico Nicolini da Sabbio. The mark of the heirs also appears sporadically in editions published before the death of Melchiorre the elder, which occurred towards the end of 1565.
