Symbol Description
The idea of a frame is important to separate off the rest of the elements of the title page off from the printers mark itself. The frames are often architectural, evoking buildings from the classical era. They also contain many symbolic decorations, which are less central than the main device of the mark, but add to the overall symbolism. The frame is also useful for creating separate "panels" for printers' marks with more than one printers' device: thus we have two, three, and even four "windows" with the attendant numerical symbolism of each.
