Symbol Description

The bard of Apollo, the archetype for all bards, singers, and musicians, who passed through the underworld, just failed to win back his wife from death, and was torn apart by the maenads of Dionysus. His head was hurled in the Hebrus, and continued singing down the river, a symbol of the regenerative power of song. The Orphic mysteries were very influential on Plato, and thus, eventually on Christianity.
