Symbol Description

Nudity is both a symbol of purity and innocence, like Adam and Eve in the garden, or one of sensuality and prurience. The classical era took a different approach to nudity than did the Medieval, with the ideal of the heroic or divine nude. In the Renaissance there is a return to these forms, although there also persists much imagery of nudity as a badge of shame, as in the depiction of damned souls. As allegory, nude figures are often in positive aspect.
